Since 2013, Rhode Island Classroom explores the latest technology, lessons, and people who are making the grade in Rhode Island's Kindergarten through grade 12 classrooms. Produced by WSBE Rhode Island PBS, Rhode Island Classroom is a half-hour periodic series that introduces stand-out teachers who are inspiring students, break-through courses offered in area schools, and new, exciting programs that are motivating students to succeed.

The latest episode of Rhode Island Classroom premieres Friday, March 29 at 8 p.m., and features the following stories:

Marine Trades: The Warwick Area Career and Technical Center has severaImage - WACTCprogramtrim.pngl career pathways, including a marine trades program. This episode explores how the state has connected this career pathway program with employers at Electric Boat, enabling students to leave high school trained for employment.

Herreshoff Boat Building: Students from across the state come to the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol to learn how to build a boat in this after-school program. The program incorporates the students' science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) skills to manufacture a boat from the first board to the final product. This hands-on extension of their education sparks an interest in the marine trades industry, and builds skills useful in several job sectors.

Peace Corps Program at URI: Hundreds of URI graduates have gone on after graduation to join the Peace Corps since it was founded in 1961. In 2016, URI signed on with the Peace Corps to create a “Peace Corp Prep” program, the only one in the state at that time. The program creates a framework that connects course work with hands-on experience, as well as professional and leadership development.

The Walking School Bus: Getting students to school is nImage - walkingschoolbus.jpgot always easy. This segment follows the “walking school bus” at Fogarty Elementary School in Providence on their morning journey to pick children up at their doors and walk them to school. First and foremost, this program curbs chronic absenteeism in the school, but also promotes daily exercise and positive relationships between these young children and the volunteers who walk and talk with them each morning.

After the premiere, this episode of Rhode Island Classroom encores on Saturday, March 30 at noon and 11 p.m., and Sunday at 7 p.m.
