Last Updated by Lucie Raposo on

Anne of Green Gables, a new adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel, tells the story of Anne Shirley, a precocious orphan placed in the care of Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew. Neither the adventurous Anne nor the conservative Marilla could anticipate the profound effect they’d have on each other’s lives.

The story has created a journey of learning and personal engagement that has resonated with generations since L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908. The book remains an iconic work of Canadian literature and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.

Eleven-year-old Ella Ballentine stars as Anne, Sara Botsford plays Marilla, and the film features acclaimed actor Martin Sheen in the role of Matthw Cuthbert.

Rhode Island PBS premieres Anne of Green Gables for the whole family at 1 p.m. on Christmas Day.
