What
is Video Streaming?

Video
Streaming from Rhode Island PBS is a subscription-based service
that gives students and teachers access to more than 4,000*
full-length and 44,000* clips of core-curriculum, standards-based
video programs instantly - over the Internet.
A
simple keyword or concept search of the database can locate
grade- and subject-specific content in science, social
studies, language arts, math, and health,
available for viewing right on the computer. Each video is
indexed, which gives the option of viewing the entire program
or watching a shorter clip.
Participation by your school in the Rhode Island PBS Video
Streaming project during the 2006-2007 school year is made
possible by the generous support of New
England Gas Company.
How
Does It Work?
Streaming
media technology - video streaming - enables the real time,
or on-demand distribution of audio, video and multimedia on
the internet. Streaming media is the simultaneous transfer
of digital media (video, voice and data) so that it is received
as a continuous real-time stream. Streamed data is transmitted
by a server application and received and displayed in real-time
by client applications such as the Microsoft's Windows Media
Player or the QuickTime Player. These applications can start
displaying video or playing back audio as soon as enough data
has been received and stored in the receiving station’s buffer.
A streamed file is simultaneously downloaded and viewed, but
leaves behind no physical file on the viewer's computer.
