Video Streaming: An Application Used to Enhance Curriculum-Based Lesson Plans in a Variety of Subjects for Students K-12

Rhode Island PBS the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (RIDE) have formed a partnership to bring Video Streaming to schools and libraries across the state of Rhode Island.

To facilitate this partnership, Dr. María Velásquez de Tondreau, director of Education Services at Rhode Island PBS, is on loan to RIDE, where she is continuing her ongoing work as an education liaison to all school districts in the state regarding the use of multi-media technologies. In particular, she is working with the school districts on the Video Streaming curriculum.

Video Streaming, an application used to enhance instruction in a variety of sujects at all grade levels, refers to the process of viewing video over the Internet. A file is selected from a menu of video files stored on a remote server. The content is viewed through a media player while a video buffer stores and presents the information; the video file resides on a remote server for viewing although it can be downloaded directly onto the user's computer for viewing. Streaming video usually means availability of video-on-demand, but it can also mean a video broadcast in real time as an event unfolds.

Dr. Velasquez’s work involves building connections, linking Video Streaming with the state standards (Grade-level expectations and Grade-span Expectations), instructional practices, and the statewide curriculum, placing a powerful instructional tool in the hands of educators and offering students innovative learning opportunities.
