Catch the Science
Bug is a new science program for children ages 7-10. The intent of this
program is to show children that it is a big wide world to wander full of mystery
and surprise. The show will feature a variety and diversity of guest scientists
to show that anyone can be a scientist. Each episode of Catch the Science
Bug starts with a question to be investigated. Two
students called "Science Bug Investigators" attempt to answer the question.
Kim Bent, the program's host, and the Science Bug, the program's mascot, set out
on an adventure to meet up with a guest scientist and other children to learn
the answer to the question in the first segment called, Exploring Science in Our
World. The guest scientists will use demonstrations, activities, experiments,
and share experiences to make science concepts engaging. The
sharing of experiences will also help to illustrate the personal challenges and
successes inherit to all scientific investigations. In the second segment, The
Science Bug Investigator's Club, the host leads two children in a related science
activity that the viewers can perform at home or teachers could use in the classroom.
The third segment is the playing of the Science Bug Challenge, a quiz game based
on the content presented during the episode. This quiz game is designed for the
viewer at home to participate. The last segment is called Science Bug Mail and
will feature kids completing pages from the Catch the Science Bug Environmental
Science Journal. The purpose of this segment is to raise environmental consciousness
and further involve the viewer at home. The
Catch the Science Bug series will be broadcast on RIPBS in southeastern
MA during the 2007-2008 school year. The mission of the television series
is to get children, especially girls and minorities, excited about science and
to empower them to use science to create a better world. At the same time the
series debuts, hands-on science programs will be presented at libraries in the
viewing area. A website will also be launched at the time of the debut to support
and supplement the content of each episode.
